The Background

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by hours per week, then by weeks per year. At $25/hour, 40 hours, and 52 weeks, that is $52,000 per year. If you get paid time off, keep weeks at 52. If you are unpaid for vacation, reduce it (e.g., 50 weeks).

Overtime pay is calculated at 1.5x your regular hourly rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. This can significantly boost your gross pay, but keep in mind that overtime income is taxed at your marginal rate, not a flat rate.

Your after-tax hourly rate is what actually hits your bank account per hour worked. It accounts for federal income tax, FICA (Social Security + Medicare), and state income tax. This number is far more useful than your gross hourly rate for budgeting.

The overtime comparison table shows how extra hours affect your total compensation. While overtime increases gross pay, higher marginal tax rates mean each additional overtime hour is worth less after taxes than your base hours.
