How take-home pay is calculated

Take-home pay is gross salary minus four things: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax (plus a city or county tax in a handful of places). Federal income tax is progressive: the first $16,100 of a single filer's wages is sheltered by the 2026 standard deduction, then the next $12,400 of taxable income is taxed at 10%, income up to $49,850 at 12%, up to $106,450 at 22%, up to $203,300 at 24%, and so on to 37%. Married couples filing jointly get a $32,200 deduction and brackets twice as wide.

Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and nothing above that; Medicare takes 1.45% of every dollar plus 0.9% above $200,000 for a single filer. State income tax ranges from zero in nine states to a 13.3% top rate in California, and this calculator applies each state's real 2026 brackets and standard deduction rather than a flat estimate. The result is the amount that would be deposited over a year if your employer's withholding exactly matched your tax, divided into monthly and biweekly figures.

What the calculator does not include

It assumes the standard deduction, no dependents, no pre-tax deductions and no credits. A 401(k) or HSA contribution, health premiums through payroll, the child tax credit, itemized deductions and local taxes in cities such as New York, Philadelphia or Columbus all change the number. For a per-paycheck figure with those deductions, use the paycheck calculator; for a specific city, use the state page's city calculators.

Reading the result

The effective rate is total tax divided by gross salary, and it is always lower than the bracket you are 'in'. A $100,000 single filer in Texas is in the 22% federal bracket but pays an effective 20.9% including FICA, and keeps $79,125. The same salary in California keeps $73,798, in New York $74,265, in Illinois $74,316. The state comparison and salary equivalent tabs above let you put two states side by side or find the salary that buys the same lifestyle elsewhere.

Common questions

How much of my salary is taken in taxes?
For a single filer with no deductions in 2026, federal income tax plus FICA takes about 15% of a $50,000 salary, 21% of $100,000 and 26% of $200,000. State income tax adds nothing in nine states and typically 2% to 8% elsewhere. Married couples filing jointly pay noticeably less at the same household income.
Is this calculator accurate for 2026?
It uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500, and each state's enacted 2026 brackets and deductions. It is an estimate of annual tax, not of your employer's withholding, which depends on your W-4.
Why is my actual paycheck different?
Withholding is an estimate your employer makes from your W-4, and it can run higher or lower than the tax you owe; the difference becomes a refund or a bill in April. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), HSA or health premiums also reduce what is withheld. The paycheck calculator models those line by line.
Which state has the highest take-home pay?
The nine states with no income tax — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — tie for the highest take-home at any salary. Among states with an income tax, North Dakota, Arizona and Ohio are the lightest at typical salaries; Oregon, Hawaii, California and Minnesota are the heaviest.
