About these calculators

Retirement income is taxed differently from wages: no FICA, but Social Security benefits become taxable above provisional-income thresholds, required minimum distributions start at 73 or 75, and a withdrawal's cost depends on everything else on the return that year. These calculators model those interactions rather than applying a flat rate.

The 401(k) and IRA withdrawal calculators show the federal and state tax, the 10% early-withdrawal penalty and its exceptions, and how much extra Social Security a withdrawal makes taxable. The RMD calculator and forecaster use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. The Social Security tools cover the 0/50/85% taxation tiers and the claim-at-62-versus-70 break-even. The Roth vs Traditional, HSA, pension and inherited-IRA tools cover the decisions that are made once and matter for decades.

Common questions

How much tax will I pay on a 401(k) or IRA withdrawal?
It is ordinary income, taxed at whatever federal bracket it lands in once added to your other income, plus state tax in most states, plus 10% if you are under 59½ with no exception. A $50,000 withdrawal costs a retiree with $30,000 of other income roughly $8,000 of federal tax in 2026; the same withdrawal at 50 costs about $13,000 with the penalty.
Which states don't tax retirement income?
The nine states with no income tax, plus Illinois, Mississippi and Pennsylvania, which exempt qualified retirement distributions. Many others exclude a fixed amount for retirees over a certain age; each state page describes its rule.
When do RMDs start?
Age 73 for anyone born 1951–1959, 75 for those born in 1960 or later. The first one can be delayed to April 1 of the following year. Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMDs.
