About these calculators

Self-employment income carries a 15.3% self-employment tax — both halves of Social Security and Medicare — on 92.35% of net profit, on top of ordinary income tax, with half of the SE tax deductible and a 20% qualified business income deduction available below the phase-out thresholds. Nobody withholds any of it, so the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments.

The freelance and self-employment tax calculators compute the full federal and state liability on net profit. The quarterly estimator turns that into four payments with the 2026 due dates and the 100%/110% safe-harbor rule. The 1099-vs-W2 calculator converts a contract rate into the salary it is really worth once self-employment tax, health insurance and the missing employer 401(k) match are counted. The side-hustle and side-income tools show the marginal cost of extra income stacked on a W-2 salary.

Common questions

How much should I set aside for taxes as a freelancer?
Between 25% and 35% of net profit for most people: 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of profit, plus federal income tax at your bracket, plus state tax. Higher earners in high-tax states should hold back 40%.
When are 2026 quarterly taxes due?
April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your adjusted gross income was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty regardless of what you owe this year.
Is a 1099 rate of $X equal to a W-2 salary of $X?
No. A contractor pays both halves of FICA, buys health insurance, gets no 401(k) match or paid time off, and funds every gap between projects. A 1099 rate typically needs to be 25% to 40% above the W-2 salary to come out even.
