About these calculators

Investment income has its own schedule. Long-term capital gains and qualified dividends are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on taxable income, plus the 3.8% net investment income tax above $200,000 of modified AGI for single filers ($250,000 joint), and most states tax gains as ordinary income. Equity compensation is messier: RSUs are wages at vesting, ISOs can trigger the alternative minimum tax at exercise, and NSOs are wages on the spread.

The capital gains calculator handles federal, NIIT and state tax on a sale by holding period. The RSU and stock option calculators show what a vest or exercise actually costs, including the 22% supplemental withholding gap that leaves many tech employees with a bill in April. The AMT trigger calculator finds how many ISO shares can be exercised before the AMT bites. The charitable giving optimizer compares cash, appreciated stock, donor-advised-fund bunching and qualified charitable distributions.

Common questions

What is the 2026 long-term capital gains rate?
0% up to about $49,450 of taxable income for single filers ($98,900 joint), 15% up to about $545,500 ($613,700 joint), and 20% above that, plus the 3.8% NIIT above $200,000 ($250,000) of modified AGI. Assets held one year or less are taxed as ordinary income.
Why did I owe tax on my RSUs after they were withheld?
Employers withhold a flat 22% federal on RSU income (37% above $1 million). If your marginal bracket is 24%, 32% or 35%, the withholding is short by the difference, and state withholding is often short as well. The RSU calculator shows the gap.
Do states tax capital gains?
Most tax them as ordinary income at the state's regular brackets. The nine no-income-tax states do not, except Washington, which taxes long-term gains above roughly $270,000 at 7% (9.9% above $1 million).
